Notebook con Ati + Gutsy? Ahiahiahiaiahi!
Parafrasando un vecchio spot tv di una nota agenzia di viaggi, se siete possessori di un un notebook con scheda video Ati e avete installato Gutsy (Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu non cambia nulla), allora son dolori…
La seconda cosa che ho fatto dopo l’installazione di gutsy sul mio fido (mica tanto…) Amilo M1425 è stata cercare di abilitare la sospensione, funzione indispensabile per un notebook.
In Feisty l’operazione era stata un po’ macchinosa, ma era andata a buon fine grazie a uswsusp (Userspace Software Suspend)
Purtroppo pare che SLUB, il nuovo kernel memory allocator introdotto in gutsy al posto di SLAB, abbia portato alla luce un nuovo bug nei driver Ati proprietari (i dannati fglrx). Il simpatico effetto collaterale di tale bug è l’assoluta impossibilità di effettuare suspend o hibernate… A meno naturalmente di non utilizzare i driver proprietari Ati. Peccato che quelli liberi siano ancora abbastanza indietro coi lavori, tanto da rendere difficoltosa la visione fluida di un semplice filmato…
Il problema è che da parte di Ubuntu non è previsto nessun intervento per sbloccare la situazione (come rilasciare una versione del kernel col vecchio SLAB al posto di SLUB), ed Ati è storicamente poco reattiva nel correggere questi bachi.
Insomma, non ci resta che piangere… 😦

Purtroppo pare che nemmeno i nuovi driver appena sfornati da Ati (8.42.3) risolvano il problema (vedi qui)
